sry4.wav, still holding their title as Malta’s first and only cloud rap collective, recently shared a 4-song EP titled Ex Machina, born from a collaboration between producer ARCHIVE$ and vocalist Astris.

The project marks another step forward for the collective as they continue to carve out their space within Malta’s music scene, and they cut no corners. Staying true to their unmistakable sound, the effort and progress they’ve made is evident.

Angels is the perfect, strong opening to the EP; gritty lyricism carried by a whimsical beat. It’s this balance that continues to pull me back to the genre, and a reminder of why cloud rap still feels so distinctive.

The tracks that follow build on this same formula without slipping into repetition. It can be hard to stick to a style without feeling like the music will eventually become redundant, but I’m confident that sry4.wav will avoid this. While their discography may not be yet considered large, they’ve managed to stick to cloud rap and remain consistent without this issue.

Malta’s music scene is often burdened with tired stereotypes around quality, particularly when it comes to production and vocals, but sry4.wav consistently push back against this narrative, proving just how much potential exists locally when artists are given the space to experiment and evolve.

You can check out sry4.wav on all major streaming platforms, and, as always, keep supporting local talent.
